Beyond the Walls

from ZAR 4,000.00

A collaboration with Andrew Mackenzie - original is pen and ink on photographic print at 1500x3000mm in size.

In "Beyond the walls," we delve into the intricate interplay between physical incarceration and the boundless expanse of the human psyche. Through the fusion of black and white photography and intricate pen and ink drawings, this collaborative piece offers a visual journey that transcends the confines of conventional perception.

At the heart of this composition lies an old jail cell, captured in stark monochrome. The cold, unyielding interior, and writing on the weathered walls stand as silent witnesses to the passage of time and the weight of confinement. Yet, amidst this tableau of captivity, a paradox emerges. Pen and ink drawings overlay the photograph, depicting buildings of the surrounding area. Some stand tall and proud, while others crumble into disrepair. Each structure bears the scars of existence, mirroring the complexities of the human condition.

On the right-hand side of the composition, a stark reminder of captivity’s grasp emerges—a section of barbed wire stretching to the edge of the image. Here, perched upon the unforgiving wire, a crow watches, its presence a harbinger of both doom. In contrast to this, on the left, drawings of doves, flying freely in the open air. This juxtaposition speaks to the fragile boundary between captivity and freedom, where liberation often carries its own burdens.

Central to the narrative is the lone manhole cover at the center of the jail cell floor—an enigmatic portal to the outside world, yet with the unsettling realization that the world beyond may hold its own prisons. Through this metaphorical lens, "Beyond the walls" invites contemplation of the unseen bonds that shackle the human spirit.

In a world where freedom and constraint dance an eternal tango, this collaboration seeks to provoke introspection and dialogue. Through the marriage of photography and illustration, we invite viewers to question the nature of confinement, to explore the duality of liberation, and to confront the shadows that linger at the edges of perception. "Beyond the walls" is not merely an art piece—it is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of adversity, a visual poem that speaks to the boundless depths of the human experience.
