Maitlands River Eastern Cape
I do love doing aerial photography, but old school, from a helicopter or a top wing spotter plane. The use of drones has diminished this type of work, they can achieve some amazing shots and footage, but they are still not quite 'in the moment'. Additionally, the 'affordable' pro drones have a fixed uber wide lens, giving one perspective.
Hand holding from a chopper gives one the flexibility of using long or short lenses, achieving distortion of perspective or not, at will. Being in the chopper also gives one a better view from all angles, thereby seeing more shots.
Swings and roundabouts.
So, when a friend calls you and says "Hey, we need to take a Robinson 44 to Plettenberg Bay, and swap it out with another one there. There is an empty seat, wanna come for the ride?"; you do a Road Runner.
Just outside of Port Elizabeth is the Maitlands River, as it almost hits the ocean there are vast expanses of sand dunes. A very popular spot for Dune Surfers/Boarders.
The dunes create a stunning pattern of shapes and light from the air; almost a painting.
This image was taken of the Maitlands dunes from about 1000 feet up, early in the morning.
I gifted a canvas of this shot to my friend Mandy, every time I go see her I get to look at it, which unfortunately is not often enough.
